R.I. delegation heads to Boston to protest immigration law

01:00 AM EDT on Friday, July 9, 2010

PROVIDENCE — A local delegation will join Saturday's march and rally in Boston to protest the visit by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, who is attending the National Governor's Association Meeting.

Demonstrators are calling for the repeal of Arizona's SB 1070 that Brewer signed into law in April. Organizations throughout the East Coast are sending delegations, according to the Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition.

Protesters plan to rally at Copley Square at noon, then march to the Sheraton Hotel.

The law, considered the toughest in the country on illegal immigration, is scheduled to take effect at the end of this month. The Justice Department filed suit against the state of Arizona this week, arguing that the new law is pre-empted by federal law and, therefore, presents a constitutional violation.

Rhode Island organizations joining the march include the All People's Assembly; American Friends Service Committee; Direct Action for Rights and Equality; English for Action; the Olneyville Neighborhood Association; Providence Youth Student Movement; and the Rhode Island Mobilization Committee

Vans will leave the office of Direct Action for Rights and Equality at 340 Lockwood Ave., in Providence, at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. For more information call Will Lambek at (401) 489-0849, or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
