Young People Leading the Fight!

Seeds of Change is DARE's youth-led organizing campaign to build the leadership of young people in communities of color. We are seeking young people who are ready to learn how to organize and fight for issues important to youth and parents across the City!

Stop the Schools-To-Prisons Pipeline

school_to_prison_pipelineIn-school arrests are rising in the Providence School system. Too often young people are arrested for "disorderly behaviour," minor misconduct that should and could be handled by peers and teachers, not the police. Low-income students of color are disprorportionately affected- getting bigger punishments (like arrests) more frequently than other students.

We are working together to  stop the criminalization of young people- to keep young people out of the criminal justice system and in school- by organizing to win a peer mediation program in Providence Schools.  This program will give us the resources to train ourselves and other young people in Providence schools to tackle conflicts and problems at their root, without involving the police.

Peer Mediation is when students act as mediators to resolve disputes among themselves. It's a form of conflict resolution that is run by students and for students. Peer mediation can be used to prevent the escalation of a conflict and can  reduce school violence, vandalism and suspensions.

DARE To Win!Seeds-of-Change-Presentation

Seeds of Change members build the skills to lead campaigns and organize in our communities.  Here at DARE we get training on  hard skills like campaign planning, doorknocking and public speaking and we work together to to get the political education we need to understand the root causes of problems affecting young people in our community. Then we put those skills in motion- talking to other young people and organizing to make our schools and community places where young people can thrive. Read more about our victories over the years.
